Line by Line: Todd Akin Ad

Yesterday Representative Todd Akin released this new attack ad concerned specifically with the infamous stimulus bill based a few years back. Senator McCaskill voted for it, no arguing that. What we want to focus on in this ad is the Representative's claim that Senator McCaskill actually made millions because of the bill.

It is true that Senator McCaskill's husband, Joseph Shepard, had holdings in government subsidized housing, they even include that information in their financial disclosure forms. Representative Akin claims that he benefited to the tune of a million dollars. This, however, is false. Joseph Shepard was involved with a group that got government stimulus money, but two things prevent him from being right. The first being that Joseph Shepard's shares in the company was less than 5%, profiting about $10,000. The second is that the majority of the contracts held by this company were government contracts signed BEFORE the stimulus. That means that no matter what, if the stimulus passed or not, Joseph Shepard would still have made money.

Representative Akin, your previous ads may have had some truths in them, but this one is a BIG, FAT PANTS ON FIRE LIE.
