Promised Kept: McCaskill Ad

We are reaching back for this one. On February 23rd, the McCaskill camp released this ad while the GOP was still in its fight for a nominee. The ad talks about Senator McCaskill's support for veterans while she has been in office, citing support for the Rural Veterans Healthcare Improvement Act of 2009 and Hiring Heroes Act of 2011. She was a co-sponsor on the Rural Veterans Healthcare Improvement Act, but it died at introduction and never became a law, while the Hiring Heroes Act was sent from a Senate committee to the House of Representatives for consideration.

Sadly neither of those bills passed, with one even dying right off the bat. But Senator McCaskill has found a lot of veteran support in her time up in Washington. She helped pass the Post 9/11 GI Bill, and gained multiple endorsements from veteran interest groups, including Vietnam Veterans for America and Disabled American Veterans.

It would then, appear, that Senator McCaskill has been truthful about how much she has tried to help veterans.

  1. I think simply sponsoring a few bills that support Veteran Rights does not necessarily prove McCaskill is trying to help veterans. If you read the content of those bills, it's easy to see that there was little chance of either passing simply because they were to partisan, something that never has a chance in hell of passing in our current political climate.
Sure it's great that she is gaining endorsements and supporting bills that will help veterans, but I don't think she has done nearly as much as she argues she has. She is relying on citizen's lack of knowledge of the political system to find out how easy it really is to sponsor a bill once your a U.S. Senator, and that simply sponsoring a few bills does not equate to fully supporting a demographic's needs an wants.
